Just before eight o’clock I message Jack. I want to call but I’m not sure if he will be able to chat. The bruising and pain would be worse tonight.

Are you ok? I want to help you but not sure what’s best. I feel a bit useless right now. What can I do? xxoo

His return text is almost immediate

u mean everything to me my life needs to come good u help more than u know I sleep now all my love j xxxxxxxx

I send him kisses and love back and then think about his text. That seems an odd comment. His ‘life needs to come good’? Another riddle for me. What does he mean? But I am exhausted. My life seems to be an emotional rollercoaster of crises these days.

Over the next few days I think about how the one constant in my life with Jack is that nothing is ever constant. And now with the Christmas school holidays looming I can’t even begin to imagine what new dramas this may throw at us. Jack’s house will have four males stuck at home together for long periods with almost no spare money for special activities or outings or purchases and probably no real guidance or supervision from Jack. There will be no holidays away, no camping, no money for hobbies and interests that their mates have like remote controlled cars, model aeroplanes, racing bikes, go karts, junior yachts, footy, basketball and other sports.

In a way I think that it’s fortunate that all three boys say they are not interested in team sports. But I’m not sure if they just say that because Jack can’t afford all the right shoes and outfits they would need. I am such a believer in sports solving so many issues for growing lads but I can’t really push my enthusiasm on the boys if their Dad has told them he can’t afford it for three of them. I can see that the old skateboards two of them have are a cheap option, and the gaming console seems to be Nathan’s favourite past-time. I have also come to understand that the boys aren’t comfortable with even the thought of being put in new environments. By their reactions, the thought of joining a team of any kind sounds like their worst nightmare and I think that with all the changes they have gone through, all the disruptions, that they find it easier to just stick together as much as possible. But they are very different from each other and they fight so much amongst themselves. It worries me. I think it would be wonderful to get them to widen their experiences and friends. But I’m not sure Jack knows how to lead them to that. And despite Jack’s love of the outdoors and especially fishing, he never liked team sports himself, even as a young kid. “Oh gosh no. You could get seriously hurt,” he had told me once with a smile.

At least Jack has them preparing
